Does Spotify want to be the Facebook of music?

Spotify has continued its long march to create a social network based around music with it's latest update that became available a few weeks ago.

The upgrade places more emphasis on personal input from artists, encouraging fans to follow artists they are interested in. Artists then create personal playlists and follow other artists they are into, with fans seeing this interaction in theere activity feed, well that is how it is meant to work.

The OE crew have yet to see the 150+ artists we each follow post any updates at all. We are unsure if Spotify are currently experiencing technical difficulties or if artists aren't posting any updates, however even active artists such as alt-j who curates there own playlists have yet appear in our activity stream.

The idea behind the follow experience is exciting, having the ability to see the influences that shape and excite your favourite artists. However as it stands the service is broken.

Spotify's Activity stream has remained broken for us since its launch

It seems oddly similar to the launch of the Ping social service built launched by Apple in September 2010. The service, baked directly baked into iTunes much like the new social features of Spotify is an experiment of merging music consumption with social element wrapped around it.

The Apple experiment that was Ping eventually killed in 2012, with Apple citing a lack of user uptake.

If Spotify's venture into the social networking world turns out the same as Ping remains to be seen but what is clear is that without some fixes and upgrades it is set to become another footnote on the many pages of good ideas but with terrible execution.

The potential of the idea shouldn't be understated if Spotify make it work with the ability to become a one-stop-shop for everything music related. Many within the music press are already embracing the huge potential Spotify brings (us included) developing apps that recommend music based on your friends, location and the traditional critical review.

Apps were the first step. The second is bringing more interaction from Spotifys artists and its estimated 15 million users according to a recent Time article. There is great value in seeing what your favourite band is into and instantly being able to listen to it, all within the same experience. Laziness is quite powerful in our time starved world.

Spotify has also launched in Italy, Portugal and and Poland.

In the next few weeks the OE crew will take a look at our favourite Spotify Apps. No idea what we are talking about? Not to worry all will be explained.

TLl;DR (Summary): Spotify has rolled out some new social features that enable fans to see what bands there favourite artists are listening to. Unfortuntely there are still issues.

The oddly launch of the Ping social service built launched by Apple. That's amazing, I like that service. Recently I am getting the Add music from spotify link above the music section. Since then all my likes are gone and the box shows nothing except add music our like.
